Jane Hudson, executive director of Disability Rights
Iowa, who says blocking visually impaired people from the right to
obtain weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
That federal law generally prohibits different treatment based on
disabilities.
The psychiatric industry insists that mental
illnesses are the same as physical illnesses, and that insurance
companies must pay for full coverage as they do for physical illnesses.
The Human Services Industrial Complex (MA State Rep. Marie Parente's
term) demands parity. Yet here is one more example of how alleged mental
illnesses are not the same as physical illnesses. Mental illnesses are
not illnesses at all but personal opinion masquerading as science, of
Constitutionally protected speech and behavior that psychiatrists do not
like or do not understand. The same Americans With Disabilities Act of
1990, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 apply to persons accused of
mental illnesses, as they do to blind persons. Discriminating based on
disability is a violation of the laws.
