Holding Computer Files Hostage For Ransom
[From article]
This is a criminal operation. They are holding your folders and files ransom. We call this ransomware because that is exactly what it is. You need to pay in order to have access to them once again.”
And that is exactly what happened last month at the Swansea Police Department.
Cryptolocker ransomware took over the department’s entire computer system and the police were forced to pay a $750 ransom to get back control.
As the ransomware takes over your computer, a countdown clock appears and shows victims how long they have to pay up. That means purchasing a key, or software, to reverse the process. And victims must do that using the online virtual currency known as bitcoins.
“Once you have purchased a bitcoin, then the transaction that you use that bitcoin in is encrypted, and therefore you cannot trace it,” explained Goodchild.

Lee, Mass. police chief faces extortion, money laundering charges
Joseph Buffis, Suspended Chief of Police Lee, MA
The police chief's lawyer assures us the Chief did nothing wrong. That certainly makes us all feel better. To think that a police officer might violate the laws he is sworn to uphold. Shocking. It is why the Mollen Commission in New York recommended constant scrutiny to avoid any false accusations about police who have enormous power over other people. The police say they are human but do not abuse their power as other humans do. That makes us all feel better. Sigh!

Racial Extortion in Albany?
“Paterson directly told [casino mogul Steve] Wynn he needed to have a minority partner, so he went and got Jay-Z. "
I thought that minorities were weak and vulnerable. They can dictate who gets contracts from government agencies? This abuse of race is not limited to New York state. I've been told the same thing in Cambridge, MA that in order to have a state agency consider a complaint one must have a black partner. Isn't that racial extortion? What happened to the equal protection clause? Is it only for homosexuals, blacks and women?
