International Film Festival
October 9th - 12th 2014
Regent Theatre
Arlington, MA USA
www.MadInAmericaInternationalFilmFestival.com

Dear friend of Mad in America,

From October 9th through 12th, 2014, Mad in America will be hosting its first International Film Festival at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts, USA. Our mission is to foster the pursuit of social justice and human rights by bringing together an international collective of voices, perspectives, and artistic presentations that challenge the current mental health system and explore alternative understandings of "mental illness."

The Festival Line-up

We have confirmed participants coming from across the United States, England, Ireland, Iceland, Sweden, and Canada, all of whom share a commitment to mental health alternatives. We are pleased to be bringing Elizabeth Kenny’s highly acclaimed one-woman play, SICK, to our Festival, and we will have a live musical performance from Dylan Tighe, an up-and-coming Irish singer-songwriter who’s written an album about his experiences of conventional psychiatric treatment. Our days will be full of films, speakers, and panels, and we will have an opening night cocktail party, as well as a closing night Gala dinner and Awards Ceremony with music, great food, and lots of fun.

Tickets now on sale!

Tickets are now available for purchase through our website here, and we are offering great Early Bird prices through July 31st. Available for purchase will be a four-day Festival Pass for $125, which includes all films, all speakers and panels, all live performances, and all social events, as well as one-day tickets for $30 (a one-day ticket for the full Sunday, including Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, is $50).

Travel and Lodging

We’ve also posted information on our website about travel and lodging to make it easier for those coming from afar. As the fall is busy tourist season, we encourage you to book your accommodations as early as possible!

Supporting MIA

Since our launch in January 2012, Mad in America has remained a grassroots organization run solely on the donations of our readers and community members, and your generosity has meant a great deal to us. In order to finance this Festival, we are continuing to rely on such grassroots funding. If you would like to support the festival with a donation of any amount, your name will be listed in the Festival program alongside our individual and organization sponsors. If you’d like to become a sponsor, please see our ‘Become a Sponsor’ page for more information.

We intend to use a part of your donations to set up a scholarship fund for those who would like to attend the festival, but are unable to do so because of the expense. We will award the scholarships through a lottery program. Stay updated, and spread the word!

To keep apprised of announcements, updates, and information about this exciting four-day event, you can sign up for our newsletter. Please share news of Mad in America’s International Film Festival with your community, and we hope to see you in Arlington this October!

Sincerely,

Laura Delano

Disabled Man Forced To Crawl Down Plane Steps Awarded Compensation

[From article]
A disabled former college professor has won a lawsuit against an airline that forced him to crawl off a plane and onto the tarmac on his hands and knees - twice
Mr Baraka Kanaan, who is partially paralysed, was travelling from his home on Maui, Hawaii, to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts with Delta Airlines in July 2012.
Upon arrival, Delta Airlines refused to accommodate Mr Kanaan’s disability, making him crawl down the aisle, down a flight of steps and across the tarmac - and then made him do the same thing on his flight back home.

NY State Employees Abuse Disabled Civilians

[From article]
“These defendants encouraged two developmentally disabled adults to participate in, what I said on record, is a developmentally disabled fight club,” said special prosecutor Jacqueline Kagan, of the New York State Justice Center for Protection of People with Special Needs.
Kagan said one group home worker shot cell phone video while three others raucously laughed, as they encouraged two severely disabled men to fight.
“They encouraged them to strike each other – one knocking over the other in the wheelchair – and then rewarding them with praise,” Kagan said.

Texas Harvard Law School Graduate, Democratic Candidate Mocks Disabled Opponent Candidate

[From article]
Wendy Davis, the Texas state senator running for governor, became a liberal superhero last June when she filibustered a bill to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks. (This was the good filibuster, not that awful filibuster three months later by Ted Cruz – that was just grandstanding.)
Apart from her enthusiasm for abortion (and you have to admit, abortion is really cool), the centerpiece of Davis’ campaign is her life story. Also the fact that she’s a progressive woman who doesn’t look like Betty Friedan.
In a typical formulation, Time magazine said Davis was someone who could give the Democrats “‘real people’ credibility,” based on “her own personal story — an absent father, a sixth-grade-educated mother, a teen pregnancy, followed by life as a single mom in a mobile home, then community college and, at last, Harvard Law School.”
[. . .]
Just a few years after her first divorce, Wendy was on the make, asking to date Jeff Davis, a rich lawyer 13 years her senior, who frequented her father’s dinner club. In short order, they married and had a child together.
The next thing Jeff Davis knew, he was paying off her college tuition, raising their kids by himself and taking out a loan to send her to Harvard Law School.

Harvard Law School produces some special lawyers. They seem to be mostly role models, who have credentials.

It seems Battleground Texas and Wendy Davis’ strategy to win the Governor’s seat is to mock Attorney General Abbott’s disability. We caught Davis supporters and Battleground Texas staff on tape making crude statement such as “isn’t that amazing to think of? He’s in a wheelchair and we want to stand with Wendy?”

Baby Denied Access to Heart Transplant List Due To Disability

[From article]
Maverick was taken by ambulance from New York to Boston where he was prepared for surgery.
His medications were changed and his weight increased. Maverick's condition improved and amazingly on June 7, doctors called in Autumn and Charlie and told them that their son would not be getting a transplant.
This time however, it wasn't because of his medical prognosis it was because he didn't need one anymore.
'I felt like the weight of the world had been taken off my shoulders,' she said.
'The difference between Boston and all the other hospitals is the way they cared -- the fact that they cared,' she said.

Parents' outrage as they claim doctors denied their baby son a life-saving heart transplant operation 'because he is disabled'
Maverick Higgs was born in September 2012 with a heart defect
Doctors at New York-Presbyterian Hospital worked to place him on the transplant list
Two days after he was, doctors removed him citing a previously undiagnosed genetic condition
They told mom and dad Autumn and Charlie to take him home to die
Undeterred, they carried on researching his condition and got him transferred to Boston Children's Hosptial

Martial Arts Fighter With One Hand Remains Undefeated, 10-0

[From article]
Newell's ascendance as a congenital amputee isn't unprecedented. Major League Pitcher Jim Abbot carved out a 10-year MLB career as a starting pitcher, most notably for the California Angels and New York Yankees. Abbott even pitched a no-hitter for the Yankees in 1993 and even more remarkably had two career hits.

Upset PA Citizen Shoots Town Board Meeting Killing Three

Gunman: Rockne Newell has been charged with three counts of murder

[From article]
The report said Newell had been living out of a car, a 1984 Pontiac Fiero, and in abandoned buildings since being ordered to vacate.
Newell told the paper he was unemployed for years after an injury from a crash and had nowhere else to go.
'They have no right to kick me off my property,' he told the newspaper. 'They call my property an eyesore. When I bought it, it was one of only three properties on the entire road that didn't have what they call junk.'
Newell told the Record this past June he couldn’t afford the septic hookup fees, and  complained about his perceived treatment.
'If I lose this property, I have nowhere else to go,' said Newell, adding 'what they're doing to me, what they've been doing to me for so long, it's wrong.'

Texas Attorney General Runs For Governor

Attorney General Greg Abbott and his wife, Cecilia, met at the University of Texas and had been married almost three years when he was paralyzed when a tree fell on him. He said his life "has been fuller and better" since the accident.

[From article]
Abbott carries a quiet confidence borne of seven years as a Texas Supreme Court justice before becoming attorney general. He has a reserved style and wry humor meant to disarm audiences who may be concerned about his disability, for which he uses a wheelchair. Abbott, fresh out of law school, was jogging through Houston's River Oaks neighborhood on July 14, 1984, when a 75-foot oak tree suddenly splintered at its base, striking him in the back and partially paralyzing him. Abbott sued the homeowner and a tree company that had worked in the area and collected millions.
[. . .]
But he's best known for using his office to sue the federal government 27 times during President Barack Obama's tenure, legal battles that have cost Texas at least $2.58 million. The results are decidedly mixed: Five wins, nine losses, nine pending and four where Texas dropped its complaint because of changing circumstances. His chief target was the Environmental Protection Agency, which Abbott sued 17 times over pollution standards and limits on greenhouse gas emissions. He also was part of the unsuccessful, multi-state effort to overturn the White House's signature health care reform law.
