Many people celebrated the Independence Day holiday enjoying a food festival along Magazine Beach at the Charles River. Smaller groups gathered at the City park on the former Mahoney's site at Western Avenue and Memorial Drive. Still others were busy working. The owner(s) of the parking lot on Memorial Drive where Trader Joe's and Micro Center are located put up "No Event Parking" signs. First year for this? Trader Joe's closed at 5:00 PM on July 4, 2011, they usually close at 10:00 PM seven days a week. Micro Center closed at 6:00 PM. They are usually open until 9:00 PM on weekdays. The tow truck operators were in position by 6:00 PM, four of them. What makes this curious-er is that the signs announce that the cars will be towed to a lot in Medford MA. What happened to the Cambridge policy of buy local? Micro Center employees were given signs permitting them to park on July 4, 2011. One employee was told that that his car will be towed if he is on the lot after 7:00 PM. Wonderful holiday spirit of the lot owner to celebrate freedom from oppression. Freedom to oppress in a different way. No? These images were captured at about 6:15 PM July 4, 2011.
